About Auburn

Auburn, New York, is the county seat and largest city of Cayuga County, New York. Auburn lies about 30 miles south of Lake Ontario, just north of Owasco Lake, one of the Finger Lakes of upstate New York. The city's population stood at about 28,500 as of the 2000 census. It was founded by John L. Hardenbergh in 1793, and renamed Auburn in 1805. It has been home to Auburn Prison for almost 200 years. Leon Czolgosz, who assassinated President McKinley, was executed there in 1901. Famous residents have included Underground Railroad founder Harriet Tubman and Lincoln's Secretary of State, William Seward. Auburn has a climate similar to that of most of upstate New York, cool and wet. Average January temperatures are a high of 30 degrees and a low of 12 degrees, while average July temperatures are a high of 81 degrees and a low of 60 degrees. Auburn receives just over 40 inches of precipitation each year.
