About Las Vegas
Las Vegas, NV is located in the southeastern portion of the state in Clark County. It is in the Mojave desert valley, surrounded by mountains. The average daytime temperature in the winter (Jan) is 45.5 degrees F and in the summer (July) it averages about 91.1°.
Las Vegas means "The Meadows" in Spanish and was indeed founded by Spanish explorers in 1829. Las Vegas has undergone many changes since it was founded, being settled first by the Mormons in 1855 only to be abandoned two years later. The U.S. Army followed, establishing Fort Baker in 1864. The town was officially established in 1905 and grew thanks to the railroad that was being built through the area. In 1931, gambling was legalized.
Today, Las Vegas is a world class gambling destination, with top hotels, restaurants owned and/or operated by the world's top chef's and broadway style shows (as well as the traditional Vegas showgirls). Some popular nearby attractions include Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Bryce National Park.
