Durham, New Hampshire is located 20 minutes from Portsmouth. It is situated beside the Great Bay at the tip of the Oyster River. The average high temperature in the summer is 80 degrees and in winter the average high temperature reaches 32 degrees. Durham has a population of approximately 12,000 people. Durham was originally called Oyster River Plantation. On July 18th, 1689, approximately 250 Indians who were under the orders of a French soldier attacked settlements in the Durham area on both sides of the Oyster River. They killed and captured 100 settlers and destroyed 5 troop posts and other homes. It was the worst French and Indian raid in New Hampshire during King William's war.
