Claremont is located in Sullivan County, New Hampshire. Flowing from east to west, through the center of the city, is the Sugar River. The Connecticut River forms the western boundary of the city between New Hampshire and Vermont. The highest point is Green Mountain, which is approximately 2,018 feet above sea level. Claremont was named in honor of Thomas Pelham-Holles, Earl of Clare, a cousin of colonial governor Benning Wentworth. The city center is dotted with a number of factory buildings, some of which have been historically preserved. Known for its industrial heritage in the mid-1800s, Claremont now has the reputation of being one of New Hampshire’s best farming towns. Claremont experiences a warm climate between May and September, typically peaking at 80 degrees. In January, up to 16 inches of snowfall has been recorded.
