The city of Papillion (French for the word butterfly) was founded in 1870. Legend has it that Frenchmen visited the broad valley where Papillion is now located, finding it overgrown with luxuriant grasses and multitudes of wild flowers. Swarms of butterflies flitted about in the sunlight. Enthralled by the beautiful sight, one member of the party exclaimed, "Papillion!" One of the town’s most interesting sites is Ash Hollow Cave. This rock shelter reveals multiple eras of occupation attributed to at least four distinct cultures spanning over 1,700 years. Another attraction in Papillion is the Captain Meriwether Lewis, a cutterhead dredge that dates back to 1932. In 2007, Money Magazine named Papillion the 6th best place to live in America.
