About Omaha

Omaha, Nebraska is the largest city in Nebraska, located in Douglas County. It is on the Missouri River and only 20 miles north of the Platte River. Called the "Gateway City of the West", Omaha is home to the NCAA College World Series each June. On the eastern side of Nebraska, Omaha has an average high temperature of 87 degrees in July, and an average low temperature of 10 degrees in January. There is an annual snowfall of 30 inches, and an annual rainfall of 30 inches as well. The land that eventually became Omaha was acquired by the United States from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Before the first white settlers arrived, local Indian tribes included the Pawnee, Otoe and Sioux; primarily the Omaha Indians, who were an offshoot of the Pawnee, lived in the area. In their dialect, the word "Omaha" means "against the current." In 1804, Lewis and Clark passed through the Omaha area on their expedition.
