About Lexington
Lexington, Nebraska is located in Dawson County, in south central Nebraska in the Platte River Valley. Lexington is 41 miles west of Kearney and 64 miles south east of North Platte. Lexington's mean temperature is 49.6. The warmest month is July and the coolest is January. The mean winter temperature is 26.4 degrees and the mean temperature is 72.7 in the summer months. Lexington first began as a trading post in 1860 when the Daniel Freeman family settled there. In 1864 the Plum Creek massacre occurred and the Freemans fled. Fort Plum Creek was established near the ruins. The name was changed in 1889 to Lexington to commemorate the Battle of Lexington in Massachusetts. The population in Lexington is approximately 10,056 (2004). It is a farming and ranching and meat processing area. The area also has manufacturing and retailing. The Dawson County Fair and the Palm Creek Rodeo are popular annual events. Lexington was named a "Governor's Showcase City" in April 2004.
