Grand Forks is located in Grand Forks County, North Dakota. The estimated population is 97,000 and the city is ranked fourth in the state in population. The city is called Grand Forks because it sits on the forks of the Red River and Red Lake River. Grand Forks is prone to flooding because of its location. A Flood Memorial stands in the city to commemorate the devastating flood of the Red River in 1997. The Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway gave a boost to the development of Grand Forks before its incorporation in 1881.
