About Saint Louis

St. Louis, Missouri is located on the Eastern border of the state where the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers meet. Its early inhabitants were a Native American tribe, the Mississippians, who built mounds. This earned St. Louis the early nickname "Mound City." The city has also been called "The Gateway to the West" since so many pioneer wagon trains started their journeys west from the area. Founded by the French in 1764 and named after Louis XI, St. Louis was also the home of blues artist Scott Joplin at the turn of the century.
