Independence, population 113,299, is located on the east side of the Kansas City metro area. It lies three miles south of the Missouri River, near the western edge of the state. Independence is the county seat of Jackson county and was laid out on March 29, 1827. Independence’s climate is warm during the summer months, with temperatures in the 70s, and cold during the winter months when temperatures average in the 20's. Independence's most famous resident was Harry S. Truman, the 33rd US President. Other notable residents included Ginger Rogers, Frank and Jesse James, and Wild Bill Hickock.
