About Winona

The city of Winona is located in Winona County, Minnesota. Originally to be called Montezuma, the city’s name was instead changed to honor the Indian princess Winona. It is situated in the Mississippi River Bluffs in the southeastern corner of the state, and the most famous landmark is Sugar Loaf, a unique peak on a bluff overlooking Lake Winona at the eastern extremity of the city. Winona offers many festival days during the summer, including Steamboat Days and the Great River Shakespeare Festival. This city is sometimes referred to as the stained glass capital of the country. The temperature in July, at the height of the summer, averages a mild 76 degrees. In comparison, temperatures during January, in the coldest part of winter, average 18 degrees. The average annual precipitation is 34 inches. An average of 30 inches of snow falls each year.
