About Okemos
Okemos, Michigan, is an unincorporated community in Ingram County, about five miles east of the state capital, Lansing. Its population was just under 23,000 as of the 2000 census. It is named for Ojibwa chief John Okemos, who signed the treaty allowing for settlement of the community in 1839. Okemos was once a farming and trading town, but is now a bedroom suburb of Lansing. Okemos' weather is a bit cooler and drier than that of most of Michigan. Its average high temperature in January is 29 degrees, while its average low in that month is 13 degrees. In July, the average high is 82 degrees and the average low is 59 degrees. Okemos receives about 31 inches of precipitation each year, with August and September the two wettest months.
