Monroe, Michigan, is a town about 25 miles southwest of Detroit on the western end of Lake Erie. Monroe is the county seat of Monroe County. Its population totaled just over 22,000 as of the 2000 Census. The town was named for James Monroe, who was president when it was founded in 1817. General George Armstrong Custer's childhood home was in Monroe. The La-Z-Boy furniture company's headquarters is also in Monroe. Monroe's climate is similar to the rest of the Detroit area.
