About Marquette
Marquette is a small city located in Marquette County on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It serves as the county seat and has a population of just over 23,000 people. It is a major port on Lake Superior and is a transit point for iron ore shipments out of the Iron Range. Founded by Peter White and Amos Harlow and originally named Worcester (named for Harlow's hometown) it later was renamed Marquette in honor of the French explorer. Marquette is the home of Northern Michigan University which boasts the Superior Dome stadium, the largest man-made wooden dome in the world. Average summer temperatures in Marquette are in the mid-70s, with lows in the 50s. Winter is particularly cold with average high temperatures in high teens to low 20s. Marquette receives over 170 inches of snowfall a year, making it the second snowiest city in the lower 48 states.
