About Hamtramck

Hamtramck is a town in Wayne County, Michigan. Hamtramck and its neighbor, Highland Park, are completely surrounded by the city of Detroit. Its population stood at about 23,000 as of the 2000 Census. It is named for its founder, Colonel Jean François Hamtramck, who captured the Detroit area from British forces in 1796. Hamtramck's population had steadily declined from 56,000 in 1930 to 18,000 in 1990 before its recent recovery. The city is just emerging from bankruptcy protection. Not surprisingly, Hamtramck's weather is basically the same as Detroit's. January temperatures include an average daily high of 33 degrees and an average daily low of 20 degrees. Its average July daily high is 85 degrees, with an average low of 65 degrees. Hamtramck gets about 33 inches of precipitation each year, peaking during the summer.
