About East Lansing
East Lansing lies just east of Michigan’s capital city of Lansing in the south-central part of the state and is most recognized for being the home of Michigan State University. The city was first settled in 1874, the same year that nearby Lansing became the state’s capital, but was not officially incorporated until 1907. At the time of its initial settlement, East Lansing was located at the junction of two major Native American trails, the Park Lake Trail and the Okemah Road, but by 1853 it was intersected by the toll road built to connect the cities of Lansing and Detroit. Temperatures in the summer months in East Lansing average in the 70s, while winter brings temperatures in the 20s and an average snowfall of between 30 and 40 inches. At the time of the 2000 census, East Lansing had more than 46,000 residents; nearly 30,000 of those residents were students of the University.
