About Coldwater
The city of Coldwater is the county seat of Branch County in southern Michigan. The community lies to the east of Messenger Lake. The city first came into existence as a small hamlet in 1830; the land was purchased 9 years earlier from Potawatomie Indians. According to the United States Census Bureau, Coldwater had a population of 12,697 as of 2000. The city was birthplace of notorious murderer Doctor Hawley Harvey Crippen, who was hanged in London in 1910. It was also the home of Harriet Quimby, who made history by becoming the first woman in the United States to be granted a pilot's license.
