Standish, Maine is located in the southwest corner of the state, not far from Portland. It is located in Cumberland County. Saint Joseph's College of Maine, a small Roman Catholic liberal arts coeducational college, is also located there. The population of Standish is 9,285. Standish was originally land claimed by the Abenaki Indians, and was later settled by Moses Pearson, who parceled out land to soldiers who defended New Hampshire from Indian raids. The early settlement met with a lot of Indian resistance and was characterized by conflict between the two groups. In 1785 the town was officially incorporated.
