About Presque Isle

Persque Isle is a small city in Aroostook County, Maine. The estimated population in 2006 was 9,250, showing a decline of 2.7% from the 2000 Census figure. The area was originally known as Fairbanks when the first non-Indian settlement was established in 1825. Agriculture was the mainstay of Fairbanks, with potatoes as a main crop. The town was renamed and incorporated as Presque Isle city. The University of Maine was established in Presque.
