Heating contractors (also known as HVAC contractors) are important individuals
in states where cold weather is as commonplace as Maine. Maine is a northeastern state where residents see
more than their fair share of cold weather. In fact, this New England state
sees average temperatures ranging anywhere from 67 degrees to 15 degrees depending on the month of the year.
HVAC Licensing Requirements in Maine
Many states require their building contractors, such as HVAC contractors, to be licensed. This allows the
state to ensure that these contractors are doing a good job and abiding by licensing requirements. Maine
does not require general building contractors, including heating contractors, to be licensed.
Some contractors do need a license in Maine, including those that deal with asbestos and plumbing.
Make sure to contact your town's code officials as well -- sometimes towns have more stringent requirements
than the state.
Having a Problem with your Heating Contractor?
Although some heating contractors may be thankful for not having to meet licensing requirements,
this leaves residents of the state with one less safeguard. (In fact, the
Maine Attorney General's website
ranks home contractors as one of the top 3 complaints received by their Mediation Program each year.)
The good news is that those who have a problem with an HVAC contractor that they have hired can
work with the Attorney General's office to try to resolve the problem. They can also contact the
Better Business Bureau of Maine.
