About Manhattan

Manhattan is located on the Kansas and Blue Rivers in the Flint Hills of northeast Kansas, about 50 miles west of Topeka. It is the county seat of Riley County. George Park founded a city called Polistra here in 1854, but when a group of pioneers from Ohio's steamboat went aground, they settled there in 1855 and changed the name to Manhattan. The city is best known for Kansas State University and Fort Riley, and also sports the acclaimed Sunset Zoo, an art museum, and an 18-hole golf course, Colbert Hills, said to be the best in the state. That’s appropriate, since Manhattan was home to Tiger Woods’s father Earl Woods. The city’s nickname is the “Little Apple” as a take on NYC’s “Big Apple.” Manhattan’s climate has quite a range, with winter temperatures ranging from the mid teens to the mid forties, while summers can bring 100 degrees with an average range between the low 60s and the low 90s. Rainfall is around 34 inches per year.
