Northbrook, Illinois is a suburb located north of Chicago with a population of about 33,000 residents. Northbrook was originally called Shermanville when the Potowami tribe ceded their land in 1883. By 1921 many residents felt that the name Shermanville had garnered a bad reputation so Northbrook was adopted as the town's official name in 1923. The Northbrook Park District currently has 19 parks on more than 500 acres of land. The Park District hosts activities year-round, from swimming in the summer to ice skating in the winter. The Ed Rudolph Velodrome has been used by multiple U.S. Olympic teams to practice their skating. Northbrook has a summer high temperature in the mid-80s and an average winter high in the low 20s.
