Libertyville is west of the Des Plaines River and just five miles from Lake Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois. Libertyville is part of an area that was originally settled only by the Illinois River Potawotomi Indians until August 1829, when they were forced to sell much of their land to the U.S. government for $12,000 plus $12,000 worth of goods and an annual delivery of 50 barrels of salt. The Potawatomi Indians were forced to leave their land in the mid-1830s, and in 1835 Libertyville had its first non-indigenous resident, George Vardin. Libertyville’s population was 20,742 as of the latest census.
