Freeport, Illinois, is the county seat of Stephenson County. It is located roughly 100 miles west-northwest of Chicago, and about 25 miles west of Rockford, along the Pecatonica River. Its population stood at 26,443 as of the 2000 Census. The town was founded in 1837, and it was the site of one of the legendary Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. More recently, it was the home of Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), and of actress Calista Flockhart.
