About Dekalb
The city of DeKalb, Illinois was founded in 1837. It is in DeKalb County in the northeastern part of Illinois about 75 miles from Chicago. Its nickname is “Barb City” because a farmer named Joseph Glidden, known as the “father of barb wire”, developed and sold barbwire there. This agricultural community puts on the DeKalb Corn Fest every year in August. DeKalb is also the home of Northern Illinois University, which was founded in 1895. The average summer temperature is in the mid-70s; July is the hottest month. January is typically the coldest month of the year, when average temperatures are around 20 degrees. Snowfall is usually between December and March with an average of around 9 inches a month during those months.
