The city of Crystal Lake, Illinois is named after a lake in the town that was known for its crystal-clear waters. The city is in McHenry County, which is in the northeastern part of the state, about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. It is the largest city in the county and has an approximate population of 38,000. The first residents of Crystal Lake were Beman and Polly Crandall and their children, who lived there in the 1830s. There are two major parks in town and one of them, Main Beach, runs along the town’s namesake lake and the other, Veteran's Acres, is by Walkup Road. The city has a lot of small, independently owned businesses and some large companies but there is no one main industry in Crystal Lake.
