About Cahokia
Cahokia's story began over 300 years ago when French missionaries set out to convert the Tamaroa Indians to Christianity in late 1696. By the 1740s, Cahokia was established as an important center for trade and agriculture. In 1763 the population suffered a major blow when many residents fled the area in fear of the British after the French defeat in the French and Indian War. Cahokia joined the United States in 1778 and was later established as the seat of St. Louis County. From 1801 to 1814 Cahokia was the administrative center of a vast territory that stretched all the way to the Canadian border. This village of 16,391 is now part of St. Clair County, 5.5 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. The average temperature during the summer is 77 degrees, and the average temperature in the winter is 33 degrees.
