Belvidere, Illinois, is the county seat of Boone County. It is located 12 miles east of the city of Rockford and about 75 miles northwest of Chicago. Its population stood at 24,593 as of 2006, an increase of almost 4,000 people since the 2000 Census. The town straddles the Kishwaukee River; the town was founded north of the river and expanded to the south when the railroads came through the area. Several large factories call Belvidere home, notably a Chrysler assembly plant. Belvidere's average January high temperature is about 28 degrees, and its January lows average about 11 degrees.
