About Antioch
Sterling, Illinois was settled in the early 1800s. Originally there were two small settlements here named Harrisburg and Chatham; the two villages merged to create the town of Sterling, so named after Major James Sterling, a local who fought in the Blackhawk War of 1832. Sterling was officially incorporated in 1857. Residents hoped that its location along the Rock River in northwestern Illinois would help it become a major navigational route, but it did not. However, saw and grist mills powered by the river helped Sterling thrive as an industrial town. The laying of railroad tracks through Sterling a few years later aided in its growth. Today, the population of Sterling is about 15,432. In 1990, Sterling officially became a sister city with Canoinhas, Brazil. Summertime recreation is popular in the area; fishing, boating, and water skiing are all available on the Rock River.
