Dubuque, IA is a city of nearly sixty thousand along the Mississippi River in east-central Iowa. Besides being the county seat of the eponymous Dubuque County, it nucleates a small metropolitan area with a population of around a hundred thousand. The climate is generally typical of the Midwest, with summer highs in the mid-eighties and occasionally low nineties, and winter lows dropping sometimes into the single digits.
Dubuque is one of the oldest cities founded west of the Mississippi River, being first settled by the French in 1785 for mining its moderate lead deposits. By the mid-1800s, the mines were exhausted and the economy grew in manufacturing, in part due to the ease of transporting its wares down the Mississippi. Today, while manufacturing is still the largest employment sector, the city has grown into a much more modern, diversified economy.
