About Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a city in Jefferson County and a western suburb of Denver. It lies adjacent to the Interstate 70 corridor and the Rocky Mountains. The population of Wheat Ridge is estimated to be 31,234 as of 2006. Wheat Ridge was founded as a small rural village in 1859 and was named for its winter wheat crop. Until World War II, Wheat Ridge was a major supplier of fresh produce to Denver. During the 1940s and 1950s, the production of carnations became a major industry here. Wheat Ridge is home to the Jolly Rancher candy company and the Rocky Mountain Bottling Company. The Carnation Festival is held annually in Wheat Ridge. The July average temperature is 89 degrees and the January average temperature is 17 degrees.
