Black Forest, Colorado is in El Paso County, situated in the Colorado Springs Metropolitan area. The community was known for the thick forest growth in an area called Ponderosa Pines. A German immigrant thought the Ponderosa Pines area looked a lot like the Black Forest in Germany, so he named the community Black Forest. In 2000 the population was 13,247. Black Forest is known for its Black Forest Arts and Craft Guild. The guild was formed in 1965 to promote and pursue activities in the fine arts, decorative arts and crafts, and culinary endeavors. There are spring and fall shows that are popular events for those who seek unique handcrafted items. Black Forest has miles of trails and lakes for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, cross-county and downhill skiing, tobogganing, and ice skating. The average winter temperature is 26 degrees and the average summer temperature is 66 degrees. The average annual precipitation is 19.6 inches and the average snowfall is 25 inches.
