"Almost 20 yrs and going strong!"
Dont know why everyone is so upset. I dont know if the unit has changed owners or if mine was just installed correctly but we've have ours for almost 20 years. No heat pump really keeps your house warm in the winter so we use a wood stove for the most part and keep the thermostat set at 63 in the winter months, 80 in the summer. We keep it that way because I hate to give even a DIME to the electric company. so far though, we have no complaints. They just dont make things like the USED To!

"Bad installation practices"
Sounds like mostly spec home which had the cheapest install company do the work. There really isn't much difference in components from brand to brand. What you need is quality installation including sizing of home and ductwork. Don't always look for the least expensive contractor.
