"Mike B"
Had my Trane installed in 2000, been a very good unit. Eight months after warranity expired, unit broke down. Parts and labor $2000 to repair. I will replace with anything but a Trane.

"Smell problem"
Recently had new heat pump, air handler, supply lines, and duct lines installed. Worked fine during the summer; however, when the heat is on there is a smell comming from all vents - the smell of (very strong)fabric softner. Has anyone had this problem? The Dealer/installer has never come across this problem.

"freon loss"
Purchest Xl19i heat pump and airhandler system. After two years lost freon due to wear thru of bundled freon tubes. Fault like hell to get repaired. Found that Trane did not insullate tubing lines. Units produced after mine did have lines insullated and not touching. This was Tranes manufactoring problem all along but took three months before they would even cover the parts. Would not cover the labor or freon. Dealer would not due anything if not paid by Trane. Now my company owns Trane but I will never buy another one.

"14 SEER XL"
Sounds familiar. Had a Trane heat pump replaced in 2002 because of a jammed compressor. Now in 2009 same thing happened. Only 7 years!! Too costly to keep replacing every 7 years

"Trane Heat Pump 4TTR3"
Contractor installed this heat pump while building a 1000 square foot addition. It has been nothing but problems. 13 months in a coil leak; now a valve leak. All along, it has been problems. Getting tired of constantly fighting with the repair company. And forget about product support from Trane. My advice... don't buy a TRANE...any Trane!

"Beware"
Replaced old heat pump with new Trane Xe 100 in 1995. Over the years, there was always repair needed - from new fans, capacitors, recharging-averaged over $500 per year in service. Every time I had an annual maintenance-there was always a problem ranging from $200-$700. Now early 2010 - the compressor has gone out and it should be known that they no longer make replacement compressors due to the r-22 issue. Therefore, no choice but to get a new unit - further - the indoor unit is not compatible with the new refrigerant and if I want to heat pump - have to replace both units - the quote for new unit is $17,000!!! and they have to tear up walls and plasterboard to run a new line from outside to inside. The $17,000 quote does not include the repairs required to fix walls and ceilings. In the end, my experience has been the operating costs of a heat pump are cheaper but the required and costly maintenance costs are ridiculous. Now looking to convert to natural gas and go with a gas furnace. It seems that heat pumps keep the HVAC guys making a lot of money.

"Distributor problems"
We bought the Trane heat pump as a replacement for a Janitrol unit which was a total waste of money. We have been pretty happy with the Trane's performance and did notice an immediate reduction in cost after it was installed. Our unit is still under warranty and recently the defrost panel went out on it. This has resulted in our having to use the unit on emergency heat rather than heat pump setting in order not to further damage the unit. This has been going on since the end of February and we are now at the end of March and it seems that the part we need to fix the heat pump is no longer made in this country so it is currently unavailable. We were told that the part might be in at the end of March and then again it might not, so I contacted Trane customer service and was told that "they" had no control over parts for their units and all of that was handled by their distributors who decided what parts to stock. I pointed out that it was Trane's reputation that would be damaged with this kind of poor service, not the distributors, and asked to speak to a supervisor about the situation. I was sent to a voice mail and left a message but have not been contacted by anyone at Trane. So much for it being "hard to stop a Trane" - apparently sending jobs overseas will stop them!!

"TRANE Heat Pump"
We replaced our old system with the new Trane and had problems with it for the first 3 years. Now that all of the moving components have been replaced, it is doing fine. We replaced our second system with a Trane last year and we had a problem with it within the first few months. The fan failed due to a design flaw, it was replaced. If I were given a choice to buy another Trane product, I would look else where first.
