"Old= good New=bad"
Old = good, New = bad. That is what I am mainly reading here on heat pumps whether they are made by Trane or anyone else. I am not an hvac tech, just a user with a rudimentary knowedge of home equipment/appliances. Whether the reliability is down to the crappy Chinese parts most equipment uses now (Btw the same thing is happening with refridgerators with Chinese made compressors and motherboards)or maybe the new enviro friendly regulations- different coolents etc. There is a smaller Trane unit installed on my condo, it has been serviced for routine stuff maybe 4 times in 20 years, other than that totally trouble free. Runs noisy sometimes and could be more efficent though- but hey it works!

"15 Year Old Trane XE1000"
Got a new Trane xe1000 Heat Pump in 1994. Air Handler had to be replaced around 1999. About 2 years ago, the coil started to corrode. Overall, the heat pump only needed about $500 in repairs in 15 years, but the air handler hasn't lasted for 10 years and now am having to replace the whole system since r22 will be hard to get after 12/31/2009. Would recommend seeing if there is a better system out there.

"Trane XL16i"
Installed Trane XL16i, variable spd, hw media filter, Aprilaire #600 in May 2006. Been very pleased with unit. Replaced unit cost us $240 per month on budget plan w/electric co. New unit lowered our bill to $170 per mo. (2400 sq ft home).I Have hand eczema, and the heat pump does not dry my skin as bad as gas in previous homes. This winter temps. are colder than previous years and will comment when temps fall below 10 degrees the heat pump shows signs of struggle, our thermostat is set at 65 and heat pump falls 3-5 degrees below the set temperature. I have Delonghi radiator heaters over the kid's vents to keep temps in their room warmer during this time. if you are located where temps fall in the 10 degree mark or lower, rec. to install back up furnace of gas/oil/ wood stove to keep your home warm. As with any brand of heat pump you have installed, the units are only as good as the contractor who installed it. Shop for a contractor first before choosing the brand, all units are built very well nowadays. We chose our contractor, and chose Trane due to the 10 yr warranty which other brands did not offer at the time.

"My new Trane Heat Pump and Furnace"
I just had today installed a xl16i heat pump along with an XV95 furnace for my St. Louis, MO climate. I'm very curious about some of the complaints listed below as I dropped a lot of dough on this sytem. I noticed one participant was from az. My understanding is if you think you may experience temp below 40 then you do need the air handler/furnace. Any thoughts?
