"Frustrated!"
We had a new Trane Heat Pump installed by our contractor. It was supposed to be a "state of the art". After 3 years, we had a faulty compressor. It's the dead of winter and we've already gone over a week and it's still not fixed ("part hasn't come in yet."). We have emergency heat but I'm afraid of what our bill will look like if we use it often. We have 2 babies in the house. This is very frustrating! We have a warranty on parts but not labor. The repairman estimates $56/hour for at least 4 hours of work. Argh! I see I am not the only one who is experiencing difficulties with this manufacturer! Maybe Trane should re-evaluate their products if they want to stay in business.

"Problems w/ Brandnew Trane XR15 A/C and Heat Pump"
After a ton of research and recommendations from several people we wnet with a Trane. We also decided to go with the top of the line xr15 15 Seer unit with the variable speed fan. The installer came highly recommended and does residential as well as commercial work. After one day we noticed that the house wasn't cooling, I went to ther garage the air handler was blowing, checked the heat pump, nothing it had frozen up. a tech came out and checked and said something about the unit not being programmed correctly and reprogrammed it..The unit worked fine again for about 3 and a half weeks, then just the other day my wife heard the heat pump cutting on and off, got the tech back out and it turns out that the "board" needs to be replaced..The part is not in stock since the unit is so new so we have to wait about 4 days. Fortunately, the tech was able to do a bypass, so we still havee air. As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on Trane, but I can tell you that these problems don't give me much faith in the product.

"XL1800"
Had planned on installing a full GeoThermal system but the dealer and I agreed that an xl1800 was the next best route to go. Install and initial operations were fine but it took a while to figure out how to get the best from the unit (ie. night time temps settings and morning ramp ups) . In the second year the defrost cycles were causing the house to get cool and there was a excessive amount of AUX heat running. Dealer identified a bad Defrost Board and a problem with the Trane thermostat. Board replaced under warranty...thermostat cost me $300. About six years into ownership the house again started getting cold when the unit was in defrost. One heat strip was found bad and was replaced under warranty. After eight years another defrost board bad (on my nickle this time ...$300+). The final thing was that at 10 years a broken tree limb hit the outdoor unit and smashed three plastic grills and heavily dented the lid on the outdoor unit. Unit operated fine... My regular dealer and two more in the area tried to get replacement parts with no luck. I tried myself going through dealers outside the state (Pa, N.C. and Ga.) with still no luck. Calls to Trane were barely acknowledged. Finally going through Trane factory and independent distributors I realized that if the distributors didn't stock them originally the parts don't exist. Trane factory does not support units more than 10 years old. All the dealers & distributors (about 10 parties in all) were very nice and tried to help but I was out of luck. In the end I fabricated parts from aluminum and what was left of my broken plastic parts. When the unit worked it worked great and I had very reasonable heating bills but too many problems in the first eight years that makes me wonder what to expect down the road. With this top of the line heatpump I expected 20 relatively trouble free years of service. I have a second house that will be needing a new heatpump and I really have to think twice before selecting Trane again.

"Trane Heat Pump Problematic"
First winter with my new Trane system (Furnace and XL14i heat pump) the heat pump compressor failed after 1 month. Second winter unit worked fine with a set point of 20 degrees F. Two weeks into my third cold weather season and the heat pump is not working properly. Service technician will checkout the unit this week. I purchased the service agreement so have had the unit serviced both spring and fall. I rated the system Somewhat Unsatisfied because my air conditioner and furnace have worked as advertised and saved me money. If only the heat pump/compressor was more reliable.

Replaced a 20 year old carrier with xl 14 in '03 and bought extended warranty. I am on my 4th a- coil and 2nd compressor. I have had at least one major repair a year and trane and dealer hve honored warrenty, but labor and puron have cost close to $3k. I know several Trane owners and I am only one with a lemon. Trane recently paid part of labor bill to replace the compressor out of good will 4 bad a coils in 6 years is a bit much

"Review of Trane Heat Pump"
We put a Trane Heat Pump in our home just over 10 years ago. It worked well until right after the warranty expired. I would have been happy to have it repaired but Trane stated they have only a few parts left because it is an older unit. They are charging a lot of money for the part. According to our contractor, the price of the part is 6 times what it was just a year ago.

I installed a new Trane high efficiency heat pump system with "clean effects" air cleaner in 4/07. There was a recall on the air cleaner soon after installation. In the winter of 2007 I noted a bad smell when unit was on heat and in the defrost cycle. Trane had the dealer spray some chemical on the evap coil, but I continue to have the bad smell. Trane must not have cleaned the coil properly during the manufacturing process and the smell is a result of that failure.

"Mister"
I live in the South and purchased a Trane xl 1200 5 Ton Heat Pump and twh064 Variable Speed Air Handler in 92. Had a one year parts and labor on it and 10 years on the compressor. I paid $ 5,000 for the unit new. I've spent that much in repairs not covered by warranty over it's life. The compressor went out in 2002. Most parts in the air handler have been replaced over that time. The outside unit was replaced in 2007 with a XL14i which cost me $ 8,000. (too much I'm told but the compressor burned out and it was hot. I believe the dealer took advantage of that). Now the module in the air handler is out. They want $ 2,100 to replace it as it's combined with the motor. Dealer wants $ 4,500 for a new variable speed air handler. My neighbors all have cheap "Builders Model" units and my Trane has cost three me 3 times as much in repairs. So I would say that it's not any better than they were if not worse and much more expensive to own. When it's working it does a good job but it's awfully expensive to own.

"How do you stop a Trane? Turn it on!"
Have you ever seen the movie "a Christmas story"? The scenes where the father fights the furnace would almost show the effort required to keep this unit running. Unit started leaking freon at year 8, has needed three contactors, 1 starting capacitor, has not worked in Heating mode for 5 years, however original coils work very well. Unit freezes up constantly (due to low freon levels) sometimes it won’t turn on for no apparent reason. I think the Trane company is responsible for half of the hole in the ozone layer due to their leaky coils.

"New Trane can't compete with 18 yr. old Carrier"
I bought a 3.5 ton Trane xl 1200 heat pump in Sept. '05. When it heats up in the summer (over 105) the thing runs for 50 min. out of every hour. When it tops 110, it runs nonstop and won't cool the house below 79 degrees (I have documented run times several times over the years). The 18 yr. old Carrier it replaced never had a problem doing this. I only replaced it because it needed service and it was very old. I thought it would be better to put my money into a new, efficient unit. What a mistake. Trane techs have been coming out here repeatedly and tell me that this is normal operation. Really? I thought I'd save electricity by going from an ancient 8 SEER to a 12 SEER. Nope. Not likely when the unit is running all the time. Today they tried to tell me that my house isn't insulated well enough (didn't seem to bother the Carrier). My two next door neighbors (same houses, same insulation) went the cheap route and purchased Goodman units. They do not have these problems. I feel like an idiot for forking out an extra $2K for a (supposedly) top of the line unit which is obviously inferior to the cheapest unit on the market. On top of all that, the installation, by what is supposed to be the top rated Trane dealer in the area, was a complete botch job. The brought the wrong pitch rooftop stand, then they brought the wrong unit (left hand instead of right hand) and rigged my ductwork with flex ducts to make it blow in the right direction. I can't believe I paid top dollar for this. If they offered me my old battered Carrier unit back, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
