Our home is 10 1/2 years old. The first heat pumps compressor went out at 5 1/2 yrs old. We were advised to replace the whole unit. That was installed 4/25/2005. About 12 months later, a defrost circuit went out. Part under warranty, $125 labor. Today, the compressor is being replaced. Part under warranty, $700 labor. I assumed this type of equipment would last a little longer. Next problem, we go to another brand!

"multiple Trane 13i failures"
We own two Trane 13I Heat Pumps. Collectively, we have replaced 2 fan motors, 2 coils, reversing valves, ambient temp sensors, coil sensors, a compressor, refrigerant too many times to admit, contactors, and all to boot. The units freeze up time and time again. They bang the fan blades against the coils as they will not defrost. We have over 3000 dollars in repair costs on what is a fairly new and high end unit. I fly large commercial airplanes for a living. I know systems and these units are junk, plain and simple. The factory trained rep cannot keep them running. They even admit that Trane now has intense quality issues. I went 11 days without heat in this winter due to Trane not supporting their product. To the HVAC contributor in this forum who thought everyone else was crazy, you are as deaf as the regional Trane rep I have tried repeatedly to discuss this with. If Trane had any sense of consumer care, they would either replace their lemons or offer prorated cash buyouts. Junk is junk and Trane has made my life miserable because of it. Do yourself a favor, buy a Carrier or similar. Never had an issue with a Carrier.

"Major structural flaw"
I called the installer of my Trane 4twr because I noticed the top vent was cracking where the fan was mounted. The installer came out and said that water was dripping from my eaves and freezing on the blades when the sun went down. This resulted in uneven fan weight that caused wobbling that was cracking the fan mount. They said it was my fault because I didn't read the manual and shouldn't have been running the heat pump when water was dripping in it. What??? So I read the users manual which said nothing about dripping water and the installation manual which revealed the true problem. The installation instructions clearly state that the unit must clear any eaves that may pour excess water into the unit, so this was 100% the installer's fault (they never should have told me to read the manual). That being said, I have to say that Trane had made a crappy product. An outdoor unit that can't handle water being poured into it... WHAT??? The real issue here is that the fan is mounted to the weak housing at the top of the unit. If it was mounted to something stronger, it wouldn't wobble and this would not happen. This is just poor engineering combined with cheap materials... pure and simple. Stay away from Trane.

"no more Trane heat pumps"
Replaced our seven year old Trane heat pump as the starting capacitor and a small valve went bad on the compressor. Dealer said it was not worth fixing as the cost would be over a thousand dollars. They installed a new unit, 4twr5 outside and a new air handler with 10,000 Kw heatstrips model 4tee3f40b1000. Very nice installation job with no complaints. Problem is when the temperature gets to 30 degrees the unit runs 24 hours a day and can't heat the house to 68 degrees and the house is only 1600 sq. ft. So far when the temperature is down to about 35 we turn the heat pump off and heat the house with the fireplace and it keeps the house at 78 degrees. When summer comes were going to have another brand installed. This was $6,000 down the drain.

"Peeved"
This unit was installed when our house was built 8 years ago. The outside unit lasted one year, the compressor failed, the entire unit was replaced. In the past 5 years, we have had to replace the compressor twice, the condensor motor, contactor, defrost sensor, expansion valve, ambient temperature sensor and have had to have the unit recharged several times due to the freon leaking somewhere they can't find the leak. The lines running from the inside unit to the outside were replaced, they also added a hard start kit. We had the unit inspected twice year to maintain a warranty. Today, I am performing an activity that has become nearly routine for me, waiting for a repair since it is not working again. I contacted Trane and outlined the problems we've had. Never heard any reply from them. It's only been one month since it broke last time, and since our warranty has now expired we have to pay for these repairs. Never never never buy a Trane!!! This is the 5th heat pump I've had in my life, but the only Trane. It's also the only one I've ever had trouble with.

I had an xl-14 installed in 1994. Less then 10 years, air handler coil replaced $1100. Later, defrost card replaced. 1/2010, the outside coil leaks. Trane wants $8k to buy. Now, I need a new system. All the units in my area are no name brands and have outlasted Trane. Also, contractor said Trane coils are not copper any more and the salt air affects the (alum) coils they use. So do not use Trane.

Replaced a working less efficient system with a Trane XL15i. Three years later, the coils are leaking and replaced for $500 free parts under warranty. After start-up, the reversing valve is leaking. I'm looking at an additional $500 for another warrantied part to be installed. As with everyone else... NO Trane support. Local Rep does not even fake it like he cares. There is no phone # to talk to a human and the guy that answers my pissed-off emails offers only canned answers that don't pertain to my problem. If you are considering a Trane system, I would suggest you smash your thumb real hard with a hammer and buy something else... It will save you hours of pain later.

"not happy"
Let me tell you, they just do not make them like they used to. I had no trouble with my old Trane at all for 20 years. The compressor finally went out so I decided to buy another one. I have only had it for 5 months and this is the worst machine I have ever had. I am so displeased with it because it is so loud when it starts up. We spend a lot of time outside and I am truly disappointed with it. We have rain and very cold weather and the unit literally had ice covering it.

"twr036 lemons"
I purchased a Trane twr036 Heat Pump and a Variable Speed Air Handler with a Clean Effects Air Cleaner. I have been through a compressor, a txz metering device, cell replacement on air cleaner all under warranty in the first five years. Right after the warranty expired, the second compressor failed and it is going to cost me 2300 bucks to repair. I asked the tech. who was here about the compressor about the air cleaner, and she said that they were a piece of junk that the factory hyped up as the best thing in the world with a huge sales campaign. That unless kept extremely clean, they had as much restriction as putting another coil in the furnace and the failure rate would be even higher if homeowners realized most had stopped working the first time they were washed. She said her company just wanted to sell new equipment and the sales staff was now larger than the service dept. The day after the tech. left, I was contacted by a sales woman who wanted to know if I was aware of how a new system would save me 100s of dollars a year and would I be interested in having a sales person stop in to talk to me. Sigh..
