"Don't buy a Trane!"
Bought an xl 18I heat pump in February 2006. At the time, it was supposed to be the top of the line in heat pumps. In February 2009, the compressor went, replaced under warranty, but I had to pay the labor cost at the tune of $1000.00. In January 2010, the compressor went again, less than one year after it was replaced. The compressor was replaced and problems continued with it. They replaced "this, that, and the other" and the unit continued to malfunction. The dealer/installer/repairer were never able to tell me what was wrong with the unit. It appears they didn't know what was wrong with the unit, since they contacted the Trane representative. I contacted Trane Consumer Relations and they have done absolutely nothing. The factory tech supposedly came to the house to look at the unit (never saw him, he never returned my calls, no feed-back, nothing, etc.) Trane Consumer Relations has been totally uncommunicative. They don't seem to care one bit for their customers. It's now July 25th, 2010 and the unit started malfunctioning again. A call was placed to the dealer/installer/repairer and it is not known whether the they have shown up to look at the unit or not. It's now a week since the initial service call was placed and a second call was placed this morning. Nobody at the Trane dealer has a clue if anyone has been to my home to look at the unit ot not. "We'll look into it and open a ticket if nobody has been there yet," I was told by the Trane representative. In the meantime, the unit continues to malfunction.

"Not Impressed"
I decided to replace my Carrier heat pump/air conditioner this past April. The $1,500 federal tax credit for Energy Star compliant heat pumps/air conditioners was a motivating factor. I called 3 local HVAC dealers to give me an estimate on a new system. I contacted the local Trane dealer to meet me at my house to give me an estimate. I left work an hour early to meet this gentleman and he was at my house a grand total of 10 minutes. I asked practically all the questions as he asked very few. He acted as if he did not want to earn my business and it was like I was wasting his time. I'm glad and I'm happy with the 2.5 ton 15.5 seer Carrier unit I purchased from a local dealer in Oxford, N.C. The owner of the Carrier dealership was great to work with and he even gave me his cell. phone number if I ever had any questions and or problems. The installation of my new system was professionally done, which is the key to purchasing a new system...INSTALLATION. You can buy the most expensive unit on the market, but if it's not properly installed, major problems can occur. I highly recommend a Carrier as the old unit I replaced was almost 30 years old. I had very few problems with the old unit during the past 22+ years I've lived in my home.

"A piece of junk and terrible service"
I installed an xl1800 heat pump and so far have had 14 breakdown calls for a variety of problems. I purchased a ten year extended warranty and the dealer - a so-called Comfort Specialist is now refusing to service the unit because we are in a "remote" location (ten miles away from their office). I complained to Trane and, as was the experience of others, they don't give a damn. I suspect most of the "satisfied" consumers had older units (which deserved their reputation). The newer ones are junk. I can't wait for Samsung to enter the field.

"Retired Chemist"
Inside coil became icing resulting to stop cooling late May this year. It was diagnosed by the local Trane service co. indicating txv was defective under the 5-year warranty on June 1, 2010. As the time I am writing (June 25, 2010), the replaced parts have not been received by the local Trane dealer. I had two houses previously installed by Ryan Home Builder using Comfortmaker Heat Pumps. At least, the first 10 years did not have any major breakdown. If Trane co. does not stock the repair parts for the customers, the company should stop selling Trane heat pumps. Beware of Trane heat pump problems, especially Washington area temperature hit 90-99 degree last two weeks. It is a horrible experience having Trane heat pump in my house.

"Trane? NEVER AGAIN"
I live in a St. Louis, MO condo with 103 hydronic loop heat pumps, all produced by Trane. Believe me when I say they are junk! The condensers have burned out on over 30 of them in the first 3 years of operation, and they are constantly breaking down and requiring repair for various other reasons. The local Trane rep is a flake. He has turned his back on the condo, and he will do nothing to make things right. The installing contractor, Jarrell Company, has also given up, and they can't convince Trane to do anything....and of course most residents in the buiding now think Jarrell is a flake contractor. HEED THIS WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL EITHER TRANE OR AMERICAN STANDARD EQUIPMENT. I repeat: DO NOT!!!!(I have now sold my condo and live in Foley, AL, where I am enjoying the smooth, quiet heat pump design offered by BRYANT!

"Nothing Stops Like a Trane"
The initial HVAC systems (we have 2 HVACs) installed in our home was a Janitrol. It was installed by the builder, incorrectly, which resulted in it frequently breaking down and the coils were rusting after just 5-6 years of use. We replaced it with a Trane under the assumption that we would have reliable systems. After all, nothing runs like a Trane! After investing a considerable amount to install two units, we have had the systems break down just as much as the Junkitrol, including a major repair because an initial part was weak and poorly made per repair technician. If we had not had a warranty, then this would have been quite an expensive repair. Considering that Trane is supposed to be a quality, reliable HVAC, I realistically expected to have at least 4 years of reliable service before the parts start wearing out but this was not the case. Some of the repairs were replacing the above mentioned part, replacing a capacitor in each compressor and other multiple repairs in order to recall the problems. Would not recommend a Trane nor would I ever install another Trane system in my home.

"NOT HAPPY WITH TRANE "CUSTOMER SERVICE""
We had a problem after 4 years and it was covered by the extended warranty. But after the warranty was up, there were 2 copper tubings that rubbed together and all the freon leaked out. It cost us the service call, the repair of the copper tubings and the regas of freon. We contacted Trane and they said sorry it was not a defect. How could it not when the area was never serviced or touched?? They are not a good customer service company. I won't recommend or purchase another one. I have had friends and family want a heat pump, but after hearing my story, they went elsewhere. Trane is a bad company for service and help.

"Defect Trane Heat Pumps"
Trane is shipping heat pump units with a crimped 1/2 copper tubing. The crimped tube is located in the exterior unit, can only be seen with the cover taken off and is located on the wrong side of the charging valves. (I have photos if anyone needs them). It appears that the tube has to be bent after it is installed into the main copper tube line in order for the exterior cover to fit. For less than a dollar, Trane could purchase a machine turned 90 degree piece of 1/2" tubing than is not bent by hand and crimped. I just spent $900 for two freon charges and the labor cost to repair the copper tubing. I know enough about the Trane policies to understand that they will say the warranty will not cover this, however, in Small Claims court I can prove that it is a defective unit! I have been involved in the retail and wholesale hardware industry for 30 years, and have expert witnesses that will provide documentation that the strength of copper under pressure is greatly reduced when intentionally bent without the proper equipment. I have more time on my hands than I need, and Small Claims court will be much more costly for them than me. I am also sending the documentation to my buddies from my previous corporate life at the CPSC in Washington.

"Trane XL 1200"
It worked ok up until the warranty was up then everything just stopped working. Every time the temperature goes outside the 50-70 degree range, it doesn't work properly. At the first cold snap or heat wave every year, we have to call for service on it and then it will work ok for about 3 months before it starts having issues again. I have replaced so many parts on this dratted thing I could have bought a new unit from a better manufacturer. "Can't stop a Trane" ha! More like "can't start a Trane". Terrible unit, if you are looking for a new unit, don't get a Trane.

"Trane XL16i heat pump is a lemon"
I live in Florida and bought the Trane xl 16I for it's supposed better efficiency. Within one year the coolant leaked and the coil had to be replaced. Luckily that was still on warranty. Now, it has leaked again at a different location and I had to pay 200 dollars in labor and coolant charges. The installer is so disgusted with Trane that they no longer install Trane equipment due to frequent equipment failures and poor response by Trane to the problems.
