"3.5 ton heat pump"
The 1st day tucson applance/tuc heating and cooling in tucson installed it the condensor fan didnt work. They replaced that and now this unit cools great. No complaints. But trying to get heat is a whole other ball game. It will not heat! One technician blames the other for improper wiring, etc. It may throw out some good heat for 5 or 10 mins. Then it blows cold. Will run all day and night with a luke warm temperature. If it's on there should be some heat produced! I purchaced this unit in 2008. The company I purchaced this unit from seems to be under staffed so now we play waiting games. Thank god we have a fireplace, so we're not totally cold in our house! Seriousiy thinking of going to a gas pack. Will never buy a rheem heat pump again.

"Never again"
I wish that this site was around 2.5 years ago when my 2001 Rheem died and I stupidly replaced it with another after reading Consumer Reports etc. Now the motor is shot and I get to pay the service repair guy $50 for coming out to say the motor was dead and when they come to put in the warranted part, another $175. I'm am so over this. When the system works it is very good but now unreliable. Forget trying to contact the company because they do not respond and do not include a phone number.

"Not reliable"
I had two of these heat pumps installed and have had problems with both. Most have been due to bad installation (sloppy wiring) not the units themselves. We did have a leak in one unit which the warranty covered the parts but not the refrigerant which was $350.00. They are louder then other heat pumps we have owned and register temp is low (high 70s) at 35 degrees outside. I would try a different brand before purchasing Rheem.

"Noise and replace A-Coils"
I have two Rheem heat pumps. The A-coil on one was replaced very soon after the original installation because of excessive "hammering" noise when it shutoff. The A-Coil was replaced again a few years later because of a leak. Now, this system is making a gurgling, running water kind of noise that two different techs say is caused by the A-coil. The 2d unit in my house has worked fine except it also had a leaking A-coil that had to be replaced. Also, the water coming out the drain is always rusty which indicates there is some rusting of the drip pan which should not be happening.

"DEFROST CONTROL BOARD"
The tech told me to replace defrost control board since the o/a fan was always running. board # 47 102684-83 replaced with no change. I suspect a foreign voltage getting into the board when the o/a main fuses are pulled. any answers? Where can I get a drawing of the unit?

"Control Unit is the weak spot on my unit"
We have been experiencing "glitches" with out Rheem heat pump for years. Our problems have been with the control unit. Over the past 5 years, we have had technicians replace or rewire pieces of the control unit. Typical service call runs between 200 and 500 dollars.

"Loud Start Up"
I just had a Rheem Heat Pump installed. The install was a bit messy (my fault, trying to help a guy starting his own business)The unit seems to be working fine, but the start ups are the loudest I've heard. It takes between 10 and 30 seconds for the compressor to quiet down after start up. I had an experience tech take a look and he said Rheems were notorious for loud compressor starts. Not sure why, but it's very annoying. It looks like technology would be getting better to eliminate the obvious. My last unit was 20 years old and much more quiet.

"Rheem's a hummer"
This Rheem replaced a Rudd (20+ years old). I know its the same company. No problems during the 1st 9 years - then the unit started humming. Located in basement but it will drown out the tv which is upstairs. Then the outside unit started humming even louder. Talked to 2 licensed Rheem repair companies - both said the same thing "You just got a hummer". But how do you shut it UP? ! Hum will get so loud at times, it's very irrating. Just makes you want to scream when it goes on and on for over 30 minutes at a time. It feels like your bones are vibrarting to the beat of the hum. They said you would have the replace the copper tubing that runs from the outside to the inside - and even then - they could not guarantee that this would shut it up. I too have heard from other repair copanies that HP only last about 10 years. But this house, I used to rent to my parents. While I lived in another house - which had a HP that was about 18 years old when it died.
