"Unbelievable Machine"
I purchased a top of the line Carrier Split system 3 ton heat pump in 1987. It has operated 365 Days a year without a problem for the past 23 years until this spring. It has never been repaired or serviced despite annual reminders from the installing dealer to do semi-annual maintenance. I believe if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Recently, it simply quit working after a few weeks of making some unusual noise when the compressor starts. I am told that this split system is no longer available which is too bad because it is the quietest unit I have ever seen (or heard). The compressor is indoors in an insulated cabinet next to the furnace. It is so quiet when the compressor runs that you have to put your hand on the case to feel if it is vibrating. Outdoors is only a fan and coil. It is virtually silent. The only indication it is running is the leaves in the adjacent bushes are moving. I don't know why Carrier would not want to continue selling such a fantastic machine. With all of the negative comments I am reading, I am not sure which brand to choose. I am hoping it can be repaired. However, one dealer I called told me that they could look at it and possibly fix it. However, there was no guarantee and because it was so old, I should probably just put that money into a new Lennox machine. From what I read, these are real lemons.

"Great Heat pump/ AC unit"
Just purchased two units, a 2 ton and a 4 ton. Purchased to replace 16 year old Ruud units, one compressor failed and the other was leaking. My installer did a great job of installing the Carrier units and my initial impression of these units is great. Our area has temps from the mid 20's (usually a few days)to the 100's for many days in the summer. This year 2009/10, we had record lows for weeks at a time. Once temps got below 38 the Ruuds used aux heat most of the time. The Carrier Performance units are generating heat down to the 25's without aux heat. The air handlers manage the air flow so you don't feel the cooler air at the beginning of the cycle and ramp it up when the air is hotter. The outside units is much quieter than my old Ruuds. So far, I am very please with Carrier units and hope for many more years of warmth and cooling. By the way, the Ruud units did very well for the money I put into them and performed fare with semi-annual maintenance.

"Carrier Satification"
My Carrier heat pump came when my house was newly built in 1982. I had the motor replaced about ten years ago. To my surprise, my current Carrier system is still heating and cooling my home very well. Go figure? I'm not looking to have a reason to spend $3,000 on up to replace my old system which is still working wonderfully. I realize that we are more than likely paying for it's electrical inefficiency in the long run. But, it still runs great.

"28 Year Carrier unit"
Excellent unit. In 28 years I have had only three service calls, two of which were refrigerant leaks as the copper tubing starts to get brittle with age, and one motor failure after 27 years. That, folks, is excellent Reading other heat pump reviews for both Carrier and Lennox, I am wondering whether the new manufacture philosophy now tends toward planned obsolence, like the appliance industry today. Planned life for appliances is now seven years when my first appliances lasted 25 years. Maybe HVAC is now the same way.

"Quite satisfied"
This unit was already installed when I bought this house 11 years ago. Everything as worked fine until now as we only had to replace the outside fan motor and a relay, two years ago. In our winter climate, this system is mainly used for heating. However, in this climate, I have always heard that heat pumps don't last that long before you need major repair or replacement. I can't say if mine is an exception, but it is still going well

"big mac"
I replaced a 13 year old ge weathertron in 1995 with a carrier heat pump and was amazedat the quiet operation . I sold the house in 2002 and never spent a penny on the system. I know the buyer personally and his only exspense is a maintenance contract he bought but nothing has ever been bad. why is it that only disatisfied people write reviews and I think they tend to exaggerate things.

"still working"
Have owned 2 4-ton units since we built the house in 1985. We are at the end of a major remodel so I'm looking for something that will use less energy than the units purchased 24 years ago, but they are both still running and cooling a large house. One better than the other, but actually running well. Replaced 1 thermostat about 5 years ago, but other than that not much maintenance. I came to this site to compare brands, and it seems people post mostly when unhappy.

"Excellent So Far"
Just installed a Carrier Performance series heat pump 25hpa5 paired with an indoor Infinity series fan coil. This replaced an almost 20 year old pure electric resistance furnace and an old Carrier central air conditioner. The heat pump is great -- very quiet and as far as I can tell with just 2 months use very energy efficient. The indoor fan coil makes less noise than my refrigerator. With the moderate temperatures here in the Pacific Northwest (Portland), this combination will be great.

"I liked my carrier heat pump"
We built a house 20 years ago. They installed a Carrier heat pump. It worked great. I did have to spend about $500 dollars on it over the last few years. It was actually worn out and I should have just gotten a new unit. It worked great for about 18 years. Overall it was a good buy. I think I paid about $2500 for it then.
