"Reality Check"
Let's clear the air here first - Yes, I sell Amana products. I also sell Trane, Rheem, Maytag, as well as others. All of these companies make decent equipment, some designs better than others. All of these companies purchase many of their components from the same suppliers such as Copeland compressors, Emerson or ge (now Genteq) motors, electrical components such as contractors, relays, and capacitors from foreign companies. Many of the unfavorable reviews for any of these products are NOT a result of the manufacturer. Most of the problems are related to the installation of the equipment. If you have part of your house that does not cool well, it's not the equipment, it's the installation and/or final balancing. Compressors and metering devices (pistons/txv's) can be damaged if the installers do not purge the lines with nitrogen when soldering. Poor cooling because of a clogged piston/txv or a compressor prematurely failing due to debris entering it is again, not the manufacturer's fault. Poor cooling because hot air is being pulled into the return from unsealed platforms or ducting- not the equipment manufacturer. I read a lot of reviews that start out with, "we bought this equipment/house 5 years ago and have nothing but problems", etc. How many times did you have any preventative maintenance done on your system in those 5 years? Was it a REAL preventative maintenance check up or a $29.95 special? Many problems can be spotted before an actual failure happens during a preventative maintenance visit. Would you drive your car for 5 years and never check the oil, brakes, or tires and be surprised when something happens? All of these manufacturers have decent warranties, again some better than others. Many of the horror stories about warranty problems are the result of poor actions of the service companies, not the manufacturers. NONE of my customers have ever been without air for more than a day or so due to "waiting for parts". A reputable company will have enough experience to find a work around to at least temporarily keep you running with a loaner motor/capacitor/whatever until the warranty part comes in. We have had instances when a specific condenser motor was on back ordered, we've gone as far as ordering a complete condenser, pulling that motor out and installing it in our customer's unit, and when the warranty motor showed up, installed it back into the new condenser and sending the whole thing back to the supplier. It's called customer service folks. Do the manufacturer's have issues with some of their equipment from time to time? Absolutely. Any of them could have a rash of failures due to parts supplied to them or their own manufacturing flaws. How well these issues are handled at the customer level is a direct reflection of your servicing company. Hopefully you'll get the idea that I'm not some hack "Chuck in a truck" one man Bubba's A/C and Heat company. I actually have over 20 years experience in residential and commercial HVAC. I can get ANY equipment at dealer cost. Anyone wonder what I put in my own home when it came time to replace my system????? Amana 18 SEER heat pump. Best performance and warranty for the money - Period. Remember, I do this for a living.

"Condenser fan motor went out"
Condenser fan motor went out. The contractor that installed it 5 months ago will not show up when he says then goes days without answering his phone Goodman needs to do a better job with their dealer network. Amana/Goodmans customer relations department is a joke. I spoke to 3 different reps all with the same answer no one would even let me speak to a supervisor. The motor itself is made in China and well... the quality just is not there. The unit has a 10year parts only warranty which is a joke because the labor to install most parts generally exceeds the value of the part. 5 months, come on Amana, this is pathetic. You should pay a reputable dealer to install this part and get some quality control. I have 3 other brands with no problems whatsoever.

"First Time Buyer"
We have had the unit four years now. It is a little loud in the defrosting stage. I would think that normal though. The whole thing is air movement. So make sure to get a good installer that understands the dynamics of the heat pump. One more thing. Make sure you have the proper amount of insulation for your climate.

"Noisy Heat Pump"
We have had this Heat Pump for one year now. It heats and cools beautifully. My complaint is that it is so loud. The cooling is not so loud, but the heating sometimes sounds like a plane is going over. With all this new technology, it is hard to believe that this heat pump should be so noisy.

"Select an installer, not a brand name"
I have two of these units, a two ton and a three ton. Both are souped up to 15 seer. The three ton has performed very well. The two ton failed the first winter and started sounding like an air compressor, something about the defrost cycle. After two service attempts, the installer replaced the entire outdoor unit. Last spring, the same unit began to operate on aux heat and I expected that it was low on freon. When cooling season began, I confirmed that it wasn't working and called the installer. A small copper tube in the indoor unit had failed and they replaced the inside coil. After talking to others about their heat pump problems, I wisely decided to purchase the 10 year extended warranty on both units so my costs have been virtually nothing. Service has been impeccable. I was advised to select a good installer, not a brand name unit, and that really has paid off. Reading these reviews, Amana is no worse than the other brands, and based on the reviews, I would probably choose Amana again if the installer was highly regarded. These are high tech devices and just don't operate like those old 70's models anymore. They operate in temperatures well below freezing, have multiple stages and perform pretty well. Obviously, if you have natural gas available, you would shut these units down around 40 degrees, use aux gas heat and avoid these noisy defrost cycles. I don't know if the defrost cycle of these Amana units is noisier than other brands but in its normal cycle it sounds about normal for outside units. Unbalanced heating or cooling, high or low air velocities and various other problems mentioned in these reviews are caused by poor installations, not by the brand of the unit. Select a top rated installer from Angie's list or based on customer reviews, buy the extended warranty, and don't worry about the brand. The absolute best unit will perform poorly if installed badly. One other bit of advice. In marginal cooling zones with high humidity periods like E Tennessee, don't get hyped about high SEER ratings. You need longer run times to get the moisture out.

"WARNING!!!!"
Warning!!!!!! This unit has had two major failures since it was installed 2 years ago, compressor and coil failed. Piece of junk! Not only is the unit junk, but, Amana / Goodman will not support it. Can't believe how we have been treated by company and their repair person. Their customer service is worthless. They talk down to you and could care less if you are having problems. Do not buy an Amana or their sister company goodman. If you do, don't say you were not warned!

"Stay away from this junk!!!!!!!!!"
Okay, straight from the horse's mouth. Goodman and Amana are complete junk!! All made in china junk. Made in Mexico would be an upgrade. Ive got a problem now with an aszc036 that has the factory representative dumbfounded and his solution is to replace the whole unit, Oh yeah this is the second time we've had to replace the heat pump. So we aren't going to sell them anymore. I'm tired of fixing these hopeless things. They don't pay us nearly enough for the time we put into honoring the warranty. Oh, and by the way. I don't believe a satisfied customer would come on here and tell you how wonderful such and so piece of equipment is. The only reason I am on here is because I had a problem with my water heater and wanted to check to see if any one else had the same problem. Out of curiosity I decided to check the Amana/Goodman name. I think it is more likely that most of the "praise posts" I see on here are from company shills doing damage control. Bottom line, stay away from Goodman and Amana. They are okay for simple gas furnace or A/C, but anything more complicated than that is beyond their capability, and a nightmare for us to make work. That being said you'll still have problems with even the simple stuff.

"18 SEER review"
I just had a complete split system Amana ASZC180601 5 ton, 2 speed 18 seer communicating heat pump installed. With their large electrostatic air cleaner and the large uv sterilizing lamp. Bought the complete system (minus uv lamp) off E-bay, brand new shipped to my door for just over $5300. The uv lamp was an additional $500. I shopped around for a custom installer. A good one that was familiar with this system. Installation, setup and ductwork mods were an additional $3175. This is where 99% of people screw up. Take the time to find the right installer. And listen to him when he tells you that something isn't right (like the ductwork in my case). The right installer is rarely the cheapest installer. But this is definitely one service where you get what you pay for, and the last place you want to be penny wise and dollar foolish. I live in Arizona. Enough said about that. This is the third HVAC setup I have had on my home over the 28 years I've lived in it. I could not be happier. You can't hear it run at all, the outdoor compressor is very quiet and the north side of the house its covering has never been cooled so well. I have a second heat pump on the south side of my home, and I will be replacing it with the exact same Amana setup early next year.

"Extremely Maintenance Intensive"
I've had this Amana Heat Pump RHF30A2A for 5 years now! I've replaced the indoor coils, compressor, txv valve, 2 reversing valves, fan motor, and fan blades!! $1000'S of dollars in labor cost!!! I will never purchase a product from Amana again!! Every internal part is made from China. The reversing valves are made in China and last about 2-3yrs before the synthetic piston seizes up! Extremely difficult to replace in the field! Amana is aware of this issue, but does nothing to address the problem!! Do not buy an Amana!!
