"Poor quality, no service"
I moved into a condo in Cleveland in August. When the heating season began, the furnace ran ok at first, but soon failed to ignite. The startup sequence progressed to the gas valve opening but the flame could not be confirmed. I called a Trane licensed company that works in this building and the analysis of the technician was that the flame sensor was bad and the blower motor bearing was noisy. Unit was 11 years old and had operated successfully for those 11 years. Nonetheless, I decided to install a new one, just to have everything new and a-ok. a new tuh1d120a9601aa was installed and I was told this was a direct replacement for the old one, same unit. The new furnace would not ignite reliably either and the installing tech noted the flame was not tight but was being sucked backward. Removed the intake 3" pipe from the collar. Unit operated properly with the intake pipe removed from the collar so that ambient air could be used for combustion. In this ambient air mode the pressure drop across the furnace (using same ports as the pressure switch) with the furnace running was 1.95" of water column. Replacing the intake pipe on the fly reduced the pressure drop to 1.88", a minor reduction in air flow and still well above the 1.48" value of the pressure switch. I repeated this process several times and to confirm that the flow reduction due to the intake pipe in steady state operation was only about 0.07". Although the 3" intake pipe (now largely converted to 4" with long elbows) length is near the limit (50'), the intake pipe is not significantly restricting the air flow during steady state operation. The problem is that much of the intake pipe run is vertical (I am on the 4th floor of a 6-story condo where the intake and vent are on the roof) and a chimney-effect draft is generated in the intake pipe. The pressure in the intake (measured relative to ambient) is only 0.04" water column, but the amount of flow as felt with your hand at the intake is impressive. My view is that the negative air flow is disrupting the flame ignition even though the total flow through the unit at steady state is sufficient as measured by the pressure switch. Question #1: Why does this new unit operate more poorly than its predecessor, even with new 4" intake and flue pipe? Has the inducer motor been downsized? It seems to me that a more powerful inducer motor would generate the necessary laminar flow in the combustion air so the burners could ignite with a tight flame pattern. Question #2: Horizontal pipe run is very different from vertical pipe run due to the chimney effects noted. Is this furnace not recommended for apartments with long (30') runs of vertical pipe? (BTW: the chimney effect is great for the flue, but a killer for the intake). Point #1: The quality of this new furnace was not good. The ignitor failed right away and was replace under warranty by the installing company (BTW, the company was very responsive and worked hard on this problem, but still!!!). Even the fit and finish is poor, the blower door and the upper door have sharp unfinished edges that cut my hands. The little tabs that hold down the bottom panel in the blower compartments don't work well and I hear clanging every time the blower turns off. Point #2: Ditto for the main board. Replaced. Point #3: The chat line is incredibly frustrating. I could not even get anyone to come online with me. The comments of other reviews seem equally frustrating!! And why is there not a technical call line for customers? I even called La Crosse, WI and got stonewalled. Terrible company policy. Outcome: Installation company rigged up a situation where some of the combustion air comes from ambient and some from outside air. All is working now, but I would like to know if Trane has downsided the induction motor in this unit, hence the failure, or if this unit is not recommended for installations with large vertical runs of pipe. AND, mostly, I would like to speak with someone at Trane to understand this situation and mostly so I can feel like an appreciated customer.

"Nothing sounds like a Train--except a Trane furnace"
Trane xv90 is 14 years old, but with limited use (supplemented by other heat source) in a moderate climate, it has had about 1/3 of expected normal usage over that time period. Though the company sales 'literature' stated that a Trane is so quiet you will hardly know when it's operating......the inducer draft motor was unacceptably loud from day 1. Trane representative replaced it 4 weeks after initial installation and it was still annoyingly loud (unless tv drowned it out), especially in light of expectations generated by Trane. Over time, with wear, the noise from the unit came to resemble a jet aircraft engine. Just replaced the inducer and circuit board with a conversion kit ( original emc inducer motor no longer manufactured) with parts and labor retailing at $1,600. It now operates more quietly than it ever has. This Trane furnace has been an overly expensive gas delivery system. Next time I'll go for simpler and send a bit more to the gas company and much less to Trane and various service personnel.

"Does not ignite properly"
I am afraid it will blow up some day but I guess I can sue. I had the installer here twice and no satisfaction. I will not buy any more Trane products.

"Control Board malfunctions after 6 months"
We bought a Trane furnace in January of 2011 and 6 months later, our furnace was not working. Our local distributor who installed the unit came and said it may be due to water damage from a "third party failure". The board which should have been sent to Trane for analysis to confirm this was never sent. Instead, we got a bill for $1000 and told the damage was not covered under warranty because it was a "third party failure"! The analysis on the board was never done by the manufacturer! So we have no idea if it may have been caused by a device failure instead. Has anybody else had an issue like this?

"NOT pleased with the Trane furnace"
We remodled about 7 years ago and were advised that the Trane was the best furance. So we purchased a 2 stage mid efficient modle. Were were told by the installers that the unit was maintenance free. However, the next winter we found out otherwise. We went on vacation during the winter season and left our 2 teenage girls at home. The last two days of the trip the furnace only blew cold air. Fortunately, my son came over and started up the fireplace to keep the house warm. When I got home I called our dealer and was told that the problem I have is likely a carboned up heat censor, and notwithstanding that I purchased the additional warranty, this was deemed to be a maintenace issue and hence the service people were instructed not to service this under our coverage. The next day I called the service manager, who came over and installed a new flame censor for free. He showed me how to remove it and to annually clean off the carbon with a fine sand paper. I now do this every year in October when I install my new air filter. Even with this, the other day (March 30) the house got cold over night and I had to clean off the censor again. Its a good thing that I know what to do now, but this could potentially be a dangerous situation in the middle of winter for unknowing people or for someone who is away for an extended period of time. For this reason alone, I would NOT recommed the purchase of the TRANE.

"comvination gas heating 7 cooling air cond"
I've had way too many service calls to get the furnace to ignite. Its costing me about $50 per mo. to keep it working. Something has to be done to fix this ignitor problem.

"XV95 + 16i"
Replaced a 13 year old Rheem with this in 2007. The system has failed 3 times since: coil leaked freon and needed replacement, blown fuse on circuit board, circuit board failure. This is a Trane problem, not an installation issue. It's a good thing it has a 10-year warranty because I'm sure I'll need every single year. "It's Hard to Stop a Trane?" - mine makes all stops!

"Jane Hoffman"
Since I have had this Trane furnace serviced by Sunshine Heating of Waupca, Wisconsin, they have replaced a sensor that has gone bad. Now if this sensor has had problems why wasn't it looked into or is this another Toyota keeping information private and unknown to the buyer. That means from now on I will be paying over $200.00 for this sensor. When I contacted Sunshine Heating about this problem, I was told that someone would get back to me. So far no one has. Jane Hoffman xerxes4442@yahoo.com 414-562-4160. PS. This furnace is in my home in northern Wisconsin so I have to leave the heat on in the winter so that my pipes don't freeze. Please send me an answer or call me. Thanks

"Trane: 20 years"
For the most part, Trane has been a good furnace. We have had ignitor problems twice and a circuit board once. We have only been without heat for a short time because our service people are local and easy to get. I am going to put in a new furnace (heat pump) and I will choose Trane again.
