"Furnace failed--part very expensive"
My furnace came with the house when I bought it 4 years ago, it has run (its also air condition) very well until this year and I had to put a new circuit board into it in April--$550--(that screws the budget when you're unemployed--big-time. It's now Dec 23,2012 and so far I've been waiting nearly 2 weeks for it to be fixed. I think I've now got a case of a lousy repair-guy---he's given me one excuse after another, but the best one is that he initially said it would be a few days for them to overnight and replace the board we just put in that's under warranty-- that was two weeks ago. Trouble is that now I'm out $550--it's freezing in the house, and I'm not really sure how to resolve this. I can't buy a new furnace right now, and I'm not sure how I can trust another furnace man. The furnace is older--1992 I think, but has run wonderfully until this year. But its sure not running now! By the way....its 28 degrees here in Ohio today!! Brrrrrrr

"My furnace"
I have a Rheem Criterion ii Plus 2 lxe 80% gas furnace installed 7-31- 2002. It has been worked on twice. The first time it would try to light and couldnt. They found a wiring harness whose pins needed to be cleaned and put back on and then it was fine. The next time a year later the flame sensor went out. My tech came out and only charged me his trip charge and replaced it for me. He said that they usually last around five years. It never occurred to me to take it out and clean it but I have heard that some people do. Other than that I like the furnace.
Word-of-Mouth
Comments on the HVAC-Talk message boards and heating contractor sites find Rheems furnaces questionable but do not necessarily nix the brands altogether:
- In this hvac-talk.com forum, an author claims that Rheem's controls provide inconsistent performance, but heat is strong when the unit does work.
- In this hvac-talk.com forum, an author asserted that Rheem performs inefficiently some of the time; this person agreed that these furnaces do provide controls that allow for on/off heat.
- In this hvac-talk.com forum, an author passed along the information that Rheems no longer replaces parts, especially older parts, so finding the appropriate component is like "pulling teeth". But Rheem diagrams do allow for clear and easy installation. Again, if a buyer knows what she or he is doing, satisfying performance of the Rheems furnaces would not be difficult.
