Have 10 year old air conditioner/furnace, Model # pgad30d1ka. New unit
installed in new house in 1998. We've been in the house since 2001. Air
conditioner has been fine. Heat didn't come on this season. Bad (rusted
at weld seams) heat exchanger and flame rollout sensor. Service
contractor can repair for $2400 but would prefer to sell me a new
Carrier for $5000. I mean, come on, how often do we need to use the heat
in this part of South Carolina? We use the air more than anything.
Clearly a design/materials issue to only last 10 years. I noticed their
newer models have heat exchangers made with stainless steel and come
with a 25 year warranty. My warranty would have expired last month (10
year but only for original owner with yearly service calls). Not a happy
camper here.

Where do I begin? I have had a Heil furnace and air conditioner
installed on 10/29/04. My first Heil to own by strong recommendations.
All I can say is that I have had nothing but trouble with both units. To
make things worse, the man that installed it will not stick behind his
work nor will he return phone calls. He should not be allowed to
represent Heil and do such horrible work. I have had to call other
dealers for Heil and low and behold my installer finally calls. I should
not have to go through this every time I need service. Which by way has
been a total of six times that one unit or the other has needed service.
When you pay almost $5000.00 for HVAC, you would think that it should
work properly. I am not sure at this point if this is a lemon of a
furnace or could it be that the installer is not qualified to perform
HVAC work. All I know is that I am not done trying to get this situation
taken care of. If I have to, I will take it all the way to the top.

I have had my old Heil Furnace and Air Conditioning system for 34 years
with a very little service needed....Because of rising energy prices I
put in a new Heil two stage gas furnace and heat pump (in August 2006).
I have saved 51% on my energy usage and my wife says our home has never
been so comfortable. I had my system installed by Thompson heating and
cooling and I have to say those guys are outstanding. I am confident
Thompson's attention to our needs is a big part of why our system
operates so well.

I have access to and install almost every major brand, including York,
Lennox, Heil, Bryant/Carrier, Trane/American Standard, Goodman, Rheem,
etc. It is quite common for a product reputation to suffer due to poor
installation. For example, failed inducer motors often are due to
improper pvc venting (too many elbows, wrong diameter, etc.). Improper
sizing can destroy a heat exchanger, diminish efficiency, affect
ignition systems, etc.
At the present moment, Heil offers the best warranty, uses a stainless heat exchanger, features a no-hassle replacement warranty, utilizes standard parts for repairs/replacements (no more "smart valve", etc. It isn't a brand name advertised on television nightly so it is usually available at a better value.
No modern furnace will last like the huge cast iron and steel monsters that used to be in basements. Those systems are no longer feasible due to (1) required efficiency regulations and (2) the cost to manufacturer to that level would result in $15,000 furnaces. Change your filter, hire a professional you trust and not just the lowest bid, and invest in maintenance.
Again, I have access to every major brand - - Heil has been trusted to support the comfort of friends, family members and my own personal home for decades without issues. Please note that most companies manufacturer under several different brand names...and then consumer magazines rank the same model with different badge names differently! The model within a brand and the installation contractor are far more important than the brand.

I had a 14 seer 3 ton unit installed in my 4 bedroom house when I moved
in and have had no problems with it. Cools better than the one we
replaced (very old). Replaced the furnace at the same...don't know if
that helps. Contractor told me that this is a mid-grade unit as the
"builder" grade units are not built as well.

Our home purchased in 1999 had a Heil. First service check in 2000
revealed pinholes in heat exchanger. Four years later same failure. icp
replaced entire unit with its Tempstar 9mpv. Now after four years with
this unit, the blower started acting up, making grinding noises at low
speed, and intermittently not kicking up to proper speed. Service techs
chased their tails over multiple service visits replacing every part
associated with blower. The day after they replaced the last part, on the
blower motor control unit, the blower suddenly stopped working
altogether. Needless to say, I am now replacing the unit with a
different brand and using a new HVAC contractor.

I am a Nate certified service tech for over 10 years and I think Heil, Tempstar, Arcoaire and Comfort Maker products are made to last a very shot time. The heat exchangers are constantly going bad. They also have very expensive inducer motors that are noisy and do not last very long. I think Ruud or an American Standard furnace is the route to go for a quality furnace. But remember you can buy the best furnace on earth. If it is not installed properly you will have problems. I would also highly recommend installing a furnace with a variable speed blower motor. You will save more on your electric than gas.

To the person that just entered his opinion 10yr. for the exhaust fan? Can't wait for you to purchase another brand if you think that’s bad. As for $200 maint. a year I think your contractor is ripping you off. They have replaced the ignition system with a new igniter no more smart-valve system. Besides if you clean your furnace every couple years ($40) if your contractor is doing his job you should never have this problem. As for the review from KY with the PGA furnace, that’s not a Heil model number that's a York.

I have a Heil 92% high eff. furnace. We have had troubles with the gas value supposedly. They have been making clicking noises. The first one started making clicking noise around year 2006. In November 2007 we replaced the gas value. Now 6 months later this one is clicking to. It also is shutting down the furnace. HVAC Mechanic came out with new gas valve. When he turned on furnace to check everything. The new one also is clicking and furnace is shutting down again. He is checking out with some tech people. I also need help on this. Could it be the circuit board or the wiring harness?

Ours is a GHK 90% unit the only problems we have had has been one HVAC blower motor, 6 years ago, and we just replaced the induce/exhaust blower assembly in late April 2008. Our Monarch Wood Burner is also attached to the supply and return air ducts with auto/manual dampers. We have had really great operations from both units. Two years ago the Rudd ac gave up and we replaced it with a high efficiency 5-ton unit and evaporator.

It appears I have owned my Heil longer than any of the other reviewers so maybe one would think my experience doe not relate to the current models. Wrong! Almost every bad fortune people experienced - I have as well. Every year I have a major service call. Just had another
Saturday. The two year old igniter went - again. Repair guy was annoyed because the igniter and computer are not for this model. I did not argue with him because we decided to switch the igniter some years ago and now the igniter lasts 2 years instead of 1 year. Had heat exchanger replaced once and the burners 3 times! Sure it was under warranty but labor is not. This product is garbage and you should run away from it. I'm in the building industry (lumber) and it is true about their reputation. Contractor grade - period.

I have had the 2 stage variable speed furnace(H9MPV) from Heil installed in my house for the past three years. This furnace has been quiet and reliable and came with a great warranty. This "n" series Heil was offered to me as well but I understand it was more of a builder's model. If Tom would have spent a little more money maybe he would have had better results. If Tom was in his house for more than 10 Years he should have gotten the higher end unit from Heil to enjoy a better warranty as well as a better result in heating and cooling. My furnace was priced hundreds under the "Lennox" model that they pulled out of here. Let me tell you I don't miss the annual bills of that "Pulse Specialty" unit. Everything was special about that thing. I have saved on hydro and the unit runs on low fire most of the time which makes it as quiet as possible. The installation crew placed isolation collar in my ductwork to eliminate noise vibration but I didn't need it. The unit is quiet.

I'm sorry to say I have a NTGM model, 92% efficiency. It's 10 years old. I just spent $350 on an inducer. A piece of the hub on the old one broke off. It caused a severe vibration, which was transmitted to the furnace, the ductwork, the floor of my house, and my rib cage. And heavens was it loud. The igniter is unreliable, even though it's been professionally cleaned several times. I can count on spending a couple hundred dollars a year on unexpected maintenance.
If you're reading this and thinking of buying a Heil furnace - don't do it. As for the people here who think they're so wonderful, make me an offer on mine. I promise you I wouldn't be reluctant to part with it. This will be the last Heil product I'll ever own in my life.

I personally own a GNK 90% gas furnace that I installed in my home. To this day i've never had it fail or have not replaced a part. I also am a Heil dealer/installer and i'm here to tell everyone out there that 9 times out of 10 if you have a problem with your furnace expecially the heat exchanger its not the problem of the furnace its the problem of the install or improper changing of the air filter. Being a service women of many different brands of furnaces I can tell you the problems you mention controll boards, ignitors, etc. are sometimes caused from power surges or moisture. I have changed controll boards on every line of furnaces York, Bryant, Rheem, RUUD, and yes a few of the ICP line. But i'm here to tell you that on a average I install approx. 45 ICP units a year and out of the 460 units installed over a ten year period I have lost 2 controll boards, 3 exhaust fans, 0 heat exchangers, 0 blower motors, 1 compressor, 6 24V ignitors, and 1 gas valve. Compared to other furnaces and parts replaced on other lines that is exceptional.

I have a HEIL propane gas unit model PGAA42E1K3. In 11 years I have had it serviced to the point that the serviceman no longer answers my calls. It has had the igniter changed about every year. The heat exchanger has been replaced once and the burner assembly twice. Now the new serviceman tells me that I need another heat exchanger, again. For the cost of the items, I should have bought from another manufacturer.

Twelve years and I am replacing it the heat exchanger went bad. I believe that a furnace in a dry heated cellar should last longer than that. the lenox furnace that was replaced was used when installed in the 50's and was still running in the 90's when we wanted a more modern unit. it would probably still be running

Our furnace is 10 years old, we have owned our home for 4 of those years. We have not gone one winter without a problem. The ignitor has failed, a valve has been replaced and just recently the heat exchanger has failed. Heil will cover the part BUT the labout is quoted at approx $600-700 and with the design of the heat exchanger I have been informed that it could very likely happen again. We are getting a new furnace this week. NOT a Heil!

80% HEIL Gas Furnace. The gas valve went after 5 years. It was under warranty, so I "only" paid $100 for a service call to install the $500 part. It has developed another problem, in that the the burners ignite momentarily, then flame out. This cycle occurs several times before the burners kick on. I'm replacing it with a 90 or 92% and will probably go with a Bryant.
IF CONSIDERING A HEIL, CHECK THE FINE PRINT ON THEIR WARRANTY- IT SAYS YOU MUST HAVE A CERTIFIED CONTRACTOR "PERFORM ANNUAL MAINTENANCE" TO VALIDATE THE 7 YEAR WARRANTY. In other words, you have to spend $70-80 on a housecall for a service tech to blow dust off your burners. Pathetic.

I installed a Heil mid efficient furnace in my house three years ago. It is vey efficient and quiet running. It is dependable and has never let me down. As for what I read in another review about Heil furnaces being contractor grade furnaces, there is no such thing. When you stand this furnace next to any furnace on the market the main body of the furnace (heat exchanger)is no worse in quality or construction than any other furnace. In fact it is better. I am a contractor and know the pain that goes along with return visits for problem furnaces. I have been in the buisness of installing furnaces for close to thirty years. I have installed many other furnaces over the years, Trane , Lennox, Carrier and others. I have had many problems with these furnaces. Lennox, which is suppossed to be the cadilac of furnaces has changed styles over the years because engineering on two of their top furnaces were a problem, namely the Whisper heat and the pulse furnaces. I chose to install Heil because they don't let me down. Time is money and keeping the customer happy is the best advertisment you can have.

This furnace is wonderfully quiet. It's a quality machine and it's built to last. The warranty on it is comparable to other leading furnace makers. Heil has been in business for over 25 years... a good sign because if they made bad products, they would no longer be in business. This is a quality unit, and when Properly Installed, it works fine just like any other machine. This unit was installed in an insulated shed, built off the back of our home just for this purpose. We also had a Heil central A/C installed and I will write a separate review for that (very positive!!!). EXCELLENT GAS FURNACE, WE'D HIGHLY RECCOMMEND HEIL PRODUCTS TO EVERYONE AND RECENTLY GAVE OUR OWN MOTHER A REFERRAL TO THE HEATING & COOLING CONTRACTOR WHO INSTALLS ONLY HEIL PRODUCTS!

I've been in my home for 5 months and the Heil HVAC has a loud, pulsing sound that keeps me awake at night. The installer and the distributor's rep say that it's a normal sound. At least 10 other people have listened and agree that it's not normal. I was even told by the distributor's rep that he had to give approval for the regional manager to come and evaluate it. The unit is so cheap that it is not even stable on the concrete pad. I think the unit is unbalanced and unstabilized, but none of the Heil reps seem to know how to correct this problem. I would never buy another Heil product. They market the product as quiet, and it's anything but that.
