"Carrier Money Pit"
Ever since our 2nd year of owning this brand new Carrier 58pav070.12 Series 160, we have had to sink money into it. Every winter something will go out. Replaced the Fan Motor after 4 years, Control board after 3 years, Igniter, Flame sensor, etc...

"Unhappy"
I have only had this furnace for 6 years and it already has a crack in the heat exchanger, I keep the filters clean and have it checked once year. The local Carrier people who installed it told me that Carrier will give me the heat exchanger for free, I just have to pay the labor, $900. The tech told me that they are having a lot of problems with it. He sees the problem at least 3 times a week. I will never buy a Carrier again.

Let me first say this: I own my own business repairing appliances and such. Our original home was built in 1964, and when we sold the house in 1994, the original unit was working beautifully... could be still--never know! My current unit is a furnace/ac combo... it was installed in 2000. Last night, the blower motor went out. Besides the fact that this unit is very poorly designed as I have noticed after taking it apart, the blower motor ranges in retail price from $500 to $800! A standard universal blower can be purchased for around $100, and they are both made by General Electric... go figure! Also, like most everyone else, it has stated waking me up in the night when it comes on (sounds like a plane taking off). Also, I have a very tightly built brick home. Once, I kept my a/c no lower than 75' for the month, and my power bill was about 75.00. While I do like my house on an average temperature of about 70' summer and 67' winter, the yearly average for my power bill is around 300.00 monthly. To be more specific, my latest power bill (April-nice cool month was about 225.00. My most expensive one last year was nearly 400.00. During the winter months, my gas bill (and I cook with electric....when I cook) is usually around 200.00. This is a huge jump monetarily considering that my old house was big, very drafty, 65' all summer, 70' all winter, heated totally with electric, with an average power bill of 175.00 and gas bill of about 15.00 per month. My advice--STAY away!!

My Carrier has been nothing but trouble since day one. The installers installed the wrong model (they decided to tell me that after it was in). It was services 4 times in the first 3 months. 3 times over the past 6 years. Like other I have read they have a balance problem with their induct draft motor. The material used for the plastic part is too soft and will wear and start to wobble. Eventually causing the motor to fail.

Having to replace the Iduction Motor for the second time in two years due to heavy vibration noise. Furnace is very loud and Carrier Manufacturer isn't much help either. You just get the run around.

I had the Performance 93 installed about 3 months ago, What a mistake. A very costly mistake. First, there is the noise level, it wakes me up all night when it turns on. I woke at 0430 this morning from the unbalanced or just poorly made/assembled induction fan noise. When the unit is operating it was causing so much vibration in my office I had to remove pictures from the wall. This was only a temporary setback, you see after the switch that turns the gas on failed the unit shut down and no longer operated. My noise problem was solved, it was 56 in my house, The repairman has been over 5 times (Great service)to fix the problem, you can't fix a poorly designed product, it is what it is. I now sit in the living room with a $30. space heater and the living space closed off, waiting for yet another fan assembly for my $7500. unit. What a piece of JUNK! I wish there was something to check that was 3 steps below VERY UNSATISFIED!

Review:
Last December, after 30 years of faithful service my Carrier furnace had to be replaced because the heat exchanger cracked. It had done a great job heating the house: no repairs, just maintenance and was very quiet. Expecting the same great product I bought a two phase 80% efficiency Carrier furnace. The owner/salesman told me the unit would be so quiet that I would not hear it standing next to it and that 90% of the time the furnace would be in the first stage thereby saving me money. ha! Was I shocked with how bad this unit is. 90% of the time it is in the 2nd stage, which costs more money and it is extremely loud. It wakes me up when it comes on during the night and the loud noise keeps me up. Some of the rooms in my house vibrate due to the extreme loudness. I live near Chicago so the winters can get quite cold and windy; having this furnace is extremely irritating and costly. Carrier did send someone to "fix" it but to no avail, and the "fix" made it even louder. It still ran in the higher stage 90% of the time. Also, now that it is summer, running the air conditioner is irritating. The furnace's blower produces an extremely loud noise and causes vibrating rooms. It never did this with the former furnace.

My Carrier WeatherMaker gas furnace model 58SXA was installed in 1990 and started having problems after the first heating season (it wouldn't start) The installer replaced the ignitor. The following year, it became intermittant and got worse after 4 months. Even the service man that installed it could not find the problem. I started to trouble shoot it my self and after 15 minutes found a cold solder joint on the PCB that the high voltage wire terminates to. Three years later, the installer informed me the company that held my warrenty went bankrupt. A few years later, problems again. (would start and stop after 5 minutes) Turning the power on and off fixed it for 3 days and problem came back. A different serviceman replaced the thermostat, draft motor, draft control board and gave up when it stopped working the next day. When I asked for suggestions, he said I could replace the ignition lock out control board and if that didn't fix it, try replacing the piot burner, which I did and it works finally but the furnace has a loud vibration that can be heard throughout the house. Five year ago the the installer sent me a letter stating my furnace is approaching End of Life and they would give me good deal on a new furnace..... I would never buy a Carrier furnace again and I tell all my friends not to buy one.

Installed the Weather Maker new in 1994. Constant problems (hot surface ignition igniter, control board and voltage problems) starting in 2002. Very expensive and hard to find parts. 11/06, unit had to be replaced due to cracked heat exchanger, after only 12 years. The most overrated and expensive equipment out there.
