"Another question"
It appears the water condensation line (for the 140m) is clogged - how do I clear it? I don't want to do anything to screw it up or make it worse. Thank you.

"Works fine when OTS works"
I replaced the Outdoor Temperature Sensor (OTS) - again - today. When the OTS works, the system works fine for me. But this is now my third OTS - what's the deal?? I hate waking up to a cold house and checking the d5 to see that the boiler thinks the outdoor temperature is 138 degrees when it's really only about 32 degrees (last year d5 showed 147 degrees, in reality it was only about 15 degrees, had to replace the ots). If Homer is still around, could he please let me know, if I disconnect the outside ots unit entirely and just wrap the outdoor wires with electrical tape, will the unit still work? And if so, what else would I need to do to make this happen? I don't want to have to replace the ots again in the future and if I really don't need it in the first place, then I'd rather not deal with it the next time it malfunctions. Thank you.

"Munchkin"
I've had my t-50 for over 6 years. It started giving me problems a couple of years ago. Occasionally, the dreaded f09, f10 I just went down and hit the reset button. Finally it was happening all the time, I called a plumber who was familiar with the boiler and had been to the classes, but he said he didn't like them. That should have been my clue. He cleaned it and replaced the flame rod sensor and when it continued to code out he was lost. I called the distributor who recommended another company. They came out and worked on it until they got it right. It was the burner gasket that needed replacing. This guy had a laptop and diagnosed the problem. The first question I asked him when I first called is "What's your opinion of these boilers"? He said he liked them. You've got to get an experienced tech out to work on the boiler. I'm not saying it isn't going to cost you some money, but they can be fixed.

"Munchkin boilers"
I am a licensed g1 in Toronto, Canada. I have worked on Munchkin, Evo, Lockinvar, etc. Most of the problems that occur with the Munchkin boilers are installation and lack of service. Gas pressure is critical. If there is not enough pressure to supply these boilers, they will lock up on f09 (flame failure). The condensate drains must be installed correctly with proper slope. If not, the condensate will fill up in the heat exchanger and will boil (flashing to steam) and cause the flame to lock out. The major problem I have come across is that the front of the boiler is lower than the back. The condensate drain connection is at the back, the boiler "must " slope down to the back for proper drainage. If there is an indirect tank installed, there could be a possibility that a hole will appear in the heat exchanger (usually 3 inches from the front just behind the strap) due to the condensate not draining quick enough. I have replaced 8 due to this. The older boilers had fan issues. The blades would break. Most times the vent termination would be the cause. The pump must pump into the boiler (even the indirect pump). Munchkin has many illustrations on how to do this, but many installers do not read. They install the boiler like the old cast boilers. This boiler can be a good boiler but it must be installed correctly. Piping must be done correctly due to the resistance of the heat exchanger. It "must" be cleaned and inspected every year. If this is not done, then the cost to repair will be high. You may write to me for any information in regards to the problems you may have with your boiler. Hopefully I can help.

"Munchkin 140m Service Issues"
Since we installed this unit in 2004, we had experienced service issues annually amounting to ~$2000 since our house was built. Since 2004, we are now on our 3rd blower motor and have also replaced the pressure switch twice. Our recently installed blower motor now "trumpets" like a goose upon start up and then quiets down after about 15 seconds. So we always know when it comes on. Due to our location in Alaska, we often experience significant ice buildup on the outside vent that unless it is chipped off, the boiler will not operate due to combustion air issues. Although we have had issues, the energy savings has been worth the aggrevation. We have a freeze alarm installed via our telephone system to let us know if the boiler fails so that our house won't freeze when we are gone for prolonged periods in the winter. I highly recommend that everyone with a Munchkin consider this "early warning" device. For $225, it's a great insurance policy!

"fixed for now"
I finally got through to Gary at Heat Transfer Products in Freetown MA. He walked us through the steps to fix the problem. The circuit board wasn't sending the right voltage to the gas valve. However, it didn't show up when he tested it but it did malfunction when under a real load. After that, we got the f09 code. One of the technical supports said to put your hand to cover the fan shroud and it would go away, which it did. So for the time being, we put a piece of furnace filter to restrict intake. The unit was running too lean. He said that the combustion should be set with a combustion analyzer when installed. I scheduled a cleaning with a friend of mine that usually serviced oil burners. He contacted Gary and was talked through the process and everything works well now. We were able to remove the filter after it got dialed in. I hope this info helps someone. I did have a hard time finding this simple info. They should inform installers that this thing needs to be tuned up not just put together upon install.

"Munchkin"
We purchased the furnace because of the sales rep. and price. So far the unit has not failed, but the installation was subpar. Exhaust duct work, wiring, and gas connections were poorly done. I think the poor workmanship is done on purpose to generate more service calls. I believe the entire furnace service industry is less than honest. It is really "buyer beware" market. If you can find a trustworthy furnace tech your odds for satisfaction will increase. Good luck,

Very efficient unit. I also have their hot water heater (the Phase II I think it is called). A couple of small issues (a little condensation leak that fixed itself being one), but basically trouble free. It's the unit my plumber put in his own house, so I figured I couldn't go too far wrong.
