"wish i had read this before buying carrier"
there was a coleman airconditioner in the house when we bought it new. it was probably the cheapest a/c unit the builder could get. we never had any problem with it. but my hubs was going to retire so we decided to put in a new unit as money would be tight afterwards. we paid off new a/c-heating unit acouple of months before he retired 2 years ago. guess what unit has been nothing but trouble since we paid it off. it lasted just long enough for warranty to be up then phut! this summer alone ( note it's still june) we have spent $1,300.00 and the darn thing quit again last night. neighbors, more than one, still have coleman units and have only had to have routine maint. and look on carrier website they say customers are the no. one priority, try to find a contact number or website. none. i want my working coleman back.

Review:
"new installation"
Agree 120% with the comments that the new Carrier is not like the old. To the folks who said you get what you pay for -- I paid $11k to have my second Carrier installed last year and the installer was supposedly Carrier certified. Have had nothing but problems with it, and NO SUPPORT from Carrier. Finally threatened to take the installer to court and said I would be sending a subpeona to Carrier. The unit was replaced. Still doesn't cool like the old one. When I was getting bids, installers were suggesting I go with other brands. No more Carriers for me.

"Headaches Already?"
I purchased an Infinity gas furnace & central a/c unit five years ago. My warranties have mostly expired. During a routing maintenance, I was informed that the a/c unit is leaking freon. I paid top dollar for an HVAC system I thought would be headache free for at least 10 years. I've already spent $500.00 plus for minor repairs not counting the upcoming "leak search" which has been estimated to cost upwards of $250.00 for the search alone. I'm with so many others and will not purchase another Carrier item.

"Carrier 3.5 Ton Unit"
My Carrier Model 38brc042330 is a 3.5 ton unit that was builder installed. It's a base model with a 5 year warranty. It operated well for 7.5 years before the evaporator coil gave out. It's an r-22 unit, so it will not be economical to start repairing it now that parts are hard to get. A new coil will cost me 2 grand installed. The only prior service required was to replace the condenser motor capacitor. I think the unit should have done 10 years minimum. The other unit I have is a Carrier 2 ton unit that is the same age and still working. Their units work hard in the South and I think 10 years is all you can expect.

Review:
"5 ton Carrier AC lasted less than 8 years"
A local dealer with an excellent reputation installed a 5 ton Carrier AC in the summer of 2002. Installation was apparently good, and subsequent service was good. In September 2008, the unit lost all of its coolant. When we turned it on this spring (2010), it had again lost all of its coolant. As the cost of repair will be approximately $2000, the dealer recommends a new unit, and I agree, but it won't be a Carrier.

Review:
"Carrier Infinity"
Unit has had 2 breakdowns. Blower motor had to be replaced just before 2 year anniversary. Cracked drain tray had to be replaced at 2 1/2 year anniversary. Therefore, big labor costs. Carrier customer service via phone inefficient re documentation of my phone calls and problems.

"Mrs."
We have the Carrier model 38ycc and have had a service agreement with a local company since the unit was installed in 2004. a few months after purchase the calibrator was malfunctionting - this was a quick repair. In Feb.2005 faulty wiring caused the compressor itself to blow and thankfully that was replaced under warranty. Yesterday, July 26, 2009 the unit quit working, it was the dual capacitor. The company replaced it, now the calibration is off and I am waiting for the repair man to return. In 5 years I would not expect so many problems with a unit. My parents own a dual unit that did not need service for 15 years. Additionally, I pay for a maintenance agreement annually in hopes of keeping the unit in top working condition.
