"works well"
Bought this unit 12 years ago, this summer the evaporator rusted out and leaked the refrigerant so it kept freezing up. The dealer I bought it off retired and sold his business to another dealer that doesn't have a sterling reputation. So I found another honest dealer who replaced the lines and evaporator and cleaned my condenser outside. Said it looked good and should last a good while longer. The inside evaporator that rusted wasn't a Carrier brand, which I didn't realize at the time. I'm happy with Carrier.

"Retired pilot"
Installed two 38vj split systems in 1982, one 2 1/2 ton for mid-level rooms, and one 3 1/2 ton unit for bedrooms. Zoned ducting for day/nite use. The 2 1/2 ton unit quit after a severe storm cause an electical outing last month. I think 27 years is all I can ask for this unit. The 3 1/2 ton unit is still plugging along and is now cooling the whole house, though not as good in the middle rooms. There is another story about the furnaces. I had nothing but problems with them from the beginning, and finally replaced them in 2004 with Lennox brand. Will never have another Carrier furnace, but like the AC'S.

"Best central air ever...."
Have a 8 seer unit built in the 70'S. Just now have to replace it as they no longer make the parts for the delay switch. Cooled the house beautifully in the summer. Only needed one freon charge since we moved in 7 years ago. I don't know if they made these things better in the 70's, but I'm replacing my Carrier with another unit.

"Very Dependable"
Parents own a 2-year old luxury townhome with dual-zone central a/C. The house has two 13 seer builder-grade air-conditioners and two gas furnaces, which work awesome! The furnaces are a little loud, but the air-conditioners are very quiet. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another Carrier product.

"Condo owner"
Have a small 1 1/2 ton A/C unit for a 900sqft condo in S. Texas. In my condo project this builders quality unit still has aprox 60% of the original units operating since the project was built in 1982. Mine has just quit after 26 years, with me being the sole owner/occupier of the home for that period. I'm surprised to find Carrier not highly recommended while looking for a replacement....will explore all options.

"CARRIER A/C"
We paid extra when our house was built to upgrade to a higher seer than was standard with the house. We have been very satisfied with the unit. other than service calls for a seasonal check we have had no problems. the other homes in the area who did not upgrade are not as satisfied as their units have to work harder to keep the house cool. as a result, their air conditioning bills are twice what mine are. sometimes folks are unhappy for reasons that are really their own fault by not doing the research to actually see what a/c is appropriate for their square footage.

"Texas 1979 Carrier 38GS"
This central 3 1/2 ton, A/C - furnace was installed when the 2200 sq ft house was built in 1979! It is finally (last summer and this) not able to cut the mustard, will only cool us to 80 degrees last summer and this summer, and our bills were high - probably a 6 Seer if we're lucky. (Therefore, I am shopping for a new system.) My very experienced HVAC friend sees some design flaws in the way the system was installed, and in the furdown system (rather than ducts) in this house; that could have improved its efficiency. Other than that, who can argue with 29 years of service? After reading reviews on many different units, I feel lucky to have had one last this long; and it is with intrepidation that I purchase another. They don't make 'em like they used to.

"Happy with my choice."
I have a Carrier 38tra seer 13, 4 ton split unit, that is working great so far. On 100 degree days, it is in the low 70's in my house and would go even lower I think, if I was willing to pay a higher electric bill. I think if you don't do your homework and pick the right company to install your system correctly, you are only asking for trouble. A good unit with a bad install is no better than a bad system.

Review:
Purchased Carrier for their name and paid a hefty price upfront but I live in Texas and I need reliability. Really like the system - never have to worry about the unit breaking or if it will cool my house during the hot Texas summers. I cannot say one bad thing about my 5 ton Carrier unit only good things. Big cost upfront but it seems to be worth it when you start to look at the other reviews here and the cost they actually end up with in the end - which very few take into consideration when purchasing a central air conditioner.

Review:
We purchased this Carrier WeatherMaker 38TUA with our house in 2000. In 1997 the previous homeowner purchased it as a replacement for the Trane system installed when the house was built in 1993. We've done absolutely nothing in the way of maintenance with this unit. The extended 10-year warranty purchased with the unit was transferred to us when we bought the house, and I'm happy to say it looks like it won't be used at all! I'll purchase the Carrier brand when we replace this unit because of the great experience we've had and the fact that our house was cool when others were not during last summer's hottest weather.
